The pattern, precisely

NEET UG is 3 hours 20 minutes for 200 questions, of which you answer 180 — 360 marks out of 720 come from the 180 you choose. Physics, Chemistry and Biology each present 45 questions: Section A (35 compulsory) and Section B (10 out of 12 to answer). Marking is +4 for correct, −1 for wrong, and Section B questions are your strategic lever — the entire exam design says 'pick the 10 you can solve fastest, not the 10 you fear least'. A 650+ score is the realistic band for government MBBS in most states; 700+ is the safe zone for top states and AIIMS through the NEET score. The question source you must internalize: NTA's published blueprint, which has kept Biology's weightage dominant (about 50% of the paper) and Physics as the traditional differentiator between the 600s and the 660s.

The NCERT-first method

Because NTA explicitly builds Biology from NCERT (and an increasing share of Chemistry from it too), the NEET method is the reverse of JEE's: read the textbook first, then train. For Biology, that means line-by-line NCERT for Class 11 + 12 — not once, but in three passes: Pass 1 (Class 11–12, with class) builds the concept; Pass 2 (first revision cycle) converts every chapter into 50–80 recall questions you write yourself (no question bank does this as well as your own questions); Pass 3 (final 60 days) is pure NCERT-speed reading — timed, chapter-by-chapter, flagging any line you hesitate on. For Chemistry, NCERT + one practice source: Physical Chemistry numericals need problem practice, Organic needs the reaction map, Inorganic is NCERT verbatim tested. Physics is the exception where NCERT is the base, not the exam — you need a serious problem layer on top. The method's core: the book is the syllabus, the questions you write from it are the training, and the mocks are the test.

Subject weightage and where marks actually come from

Biology (360 marks): Human Physiology and Genetics + Evolution are the recurring 80–100 mark engines; Botany's Plant Physiology and Zoology's Animal Physiology follow. These four clusters are ~half of Biology and are fully NCERT-scoreable — a perfect cluster strategy. Chemistry (180): Physical Chemistry (about 40–45) is the most consistent, formula-and-numerical subject of the three; Organic (about 45–50) rewards the reagent map; Inorganic (about 40–45) is pure NCERT recall with diagrams that matter as much as text. Physics (180): Modern Physics, Semiconductors, and Atoms are the guaranteed 30–40; Mechanics and Electrodynamics carry the depth; Optics and Current Electricity are high-yield per chapter. The strategic truth: a Biology-first preparation order (which is natural for medical aspirants) plus a Physics attack in the second half of the year is what separates the 620 group from the 660+ group — Physics is where NEET candidates are most overconfident, and overconfidence there is how 20 marks quietly disappear.
